Mrs. Sandra Simons Cowart, age 78, beloved wife of Carl Cowart of Tarrytown passed away on Thursday morning, April 18, 2024 at Community Hospice in Vidalia.
Born in Treutlen County, she was the eldest of two daughters born to the late George Dewey Simons and Loyce Poole Simons. She grew up in the Zaidee Community and was an Honor Graduate of Treutlen County High School, Class of 1963. After high school, she attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville where she majored in Elementary Education. Upon earning her Bachelor’s Degree in Education, she taught Elementary School in Brunswick and Savannah, GA for thirty years, until retiring in 2000 from the May Howard Elementary School on Wilmington Island. Upon retirement, she returned to her home of Treutlen County to be near her parents. Sandra and Carl were not only a married couple for fifty five years but were each other’s soul mate and best friend.
Upon returning to Soperton, Sandra joined the Georgia Retired Teacher’s Association and she and Carl became members of Soperton First Baptist Church, where they were members of the Joyce Dennard Sunday School Class.
They enjoyed being back at her homeplace and spending time together working in the yard and gardening.
Miss Sandra leaves behind her husband of fifty five years, Carl Monroe Cowart, their daughter, Carla Cowart Mooney (Steve), Palm City, FL, her sister, Sybil Petty (Bob), Greenville, SC, two grandchildren, Alex and Erin Mooney, a niece, Angie Youngblood (Jason), a great nephew Ty Youngblood.
Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 pm on Sunday, April 21, 2024 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverends Chad Coffield, Mark Sweat and George Grimes officiating.
Mrs. Cowart was laid to rest in the Tarrytown Cemetery.
Serving as pallbearers were: Alex Mooney, Steve Tebbe, R. J. Dennard, Wade Clark, Huey Walker Jr. and David Cowart.
Her family received friends on Sunday, beginning at 1:00 o’clock pm until the hour of service, at Sammons Funeral Home.
