obit Cox

Mr. Marcus A. “Jr.” Cox, age 96, beloved husband of the late Louvenia Johnson Cox of the Red Bluff Community of Soperton, passed away at his home on Monday evening, April 17, 2023.

Born in Treutlen County, he was the only son and one of three children born to the late Marcus Ausbon Cox Sr. and Mary Vera Davis Cox.  Mr. Cox grew up in Treutlen County where he was a graduate of Treutlen County High School, Class of 1943.  After high school, he attended Brewton Parker College for an additional two years.

In 1944 he married Laurens County native, Louvenia Johnson, whom would remain his wife for seventy three years and eight months.  Mr. Cox had owned and operated Cox Home Furnishings in Vidalia and Dublin for twenty three years.  He was a lifelong resident of Treutlen County and constant fixture in the Red Bluff Community.  Anytime you happened by the Cox home, you were greeted by he and his wife’s warm hospitality as if family.  Mr. Junior enjoyed gardening, tending to his wife’s flowers and any afternoon spent fishing.  His family claims him to be a Handiman; that could patch anything that might be crippled or almost broken.

He had been a lifelong member of the Red Bluff Missionary Baptist Church where he was recognized as the oldest living member of the church and had served as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Cemetery Board.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Cox is preceded in death by his son, Harold Cox, his sisters, Bonnie Faye Johnson and Wyoma Lankford.

He leaves behind, his daughter, Connie Meeler (Bouncer), Red Bluff Community of Soperton, a daughter in law, Peggy Cox, grandchildren, Regina Nobles (Eddie), Jason Cox (Amanda), Todd Crosby (Kristie), Dawn Swearingen, April Paramore (Ronnie), Hannah Moore (Bryce), Jonathan Meeler - Kelly, (Jason), twelve great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 pm on Friday, April 21, 2023 at Red Bluff Missionary Baptist Church with Pastors Cricket Green and Barry Peavy officiating.

Mr. Cox will be laid to rest beside his wife and son in the church cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Bryce Moore, Ronnie Paramore, David Walden, Jonathan Meeler - Kelly, Kenny Young and Sammy Young.

His family will receive friends on Friday, at the church, from 1:00 pm until the hour of service or friends and family are invited to visit at the Cox residence.
