Mr. Wesley “Wes” Thomas was born on April 7, 1946, to Joseph Thomas and Doris Rawls in Toombs County. He attended schools in Vidalia. In 1965 he moved to Connecticut where he was later employed by the City of Bridgeport as a driver for the nutrition center until his retirement in 2008 when he returned to Vidalia. Wesley had to stay busy and took a job as a driver for the Vidalia Funeral Home until his passing.

Wesley moved ton Connecticut to be with his father, Joe, who was his best friend. Joe taught Wesley everything he knew about fishing, hunting, and developing great lasting relationships. Wesley was a hard worker and had more than one job at a time. He used to transport cars for Nick Ganim and always had the newest car around, worked at the golf court, and did little odd jobs to remain active. Wesley used to go deep sea fishing with the sitting Mayor of Bridgeport Chris Murphy. Wesley and his dad had a lifelong friendship with men who would sit and talk to the youth on the Hill in the Terrace about excelling in life. When you saw Wesley around town you saw him with his lifelong friend Mel Taylor, the former Mayor of Vidalia up until his demise or his later years with his close cousin/work associate Wilbur Snell or Frank Sherman.

In his retirement, when Wesley wasn’t fishing or hunting, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Wesley would light up when his children and grandchildren visited. He would take them to visit family and friends. Wesley loved helping people in his community. Everyone he encountered loved him. Wesley was a man of few words, but his actions spoke volumes about his character. Wesley joined the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist church and served faithfully as an Usher for many years.

Wesley was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Annie ruth and willie James.

Wesley leaves to cherish his memory,  wife Joy Thomas; children Wesley Steven Thomas, Janice Nicole Thomas, Lavinia Marie (Keith) Gardner, Linda Gee, Robert (Maria) Brown, Jr., and Kimberly (Stacey) Russell.; grandchildren Alanna, Joshua, Kamryn, Cearia, Eliza, Jakalis, Myles, Ryan; great-grandchild Kristyn.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Mount Zion Baptist church in Vidalia.

Vidalia Funeral Home is in charge.
