Cora Johnson

Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home announces the death of Missionary Cora Johnson, age 97 of Soperton, GA  who entered Eternal Rest on Monday,  February 27, 2023, in Treutlen County Nursing Home.  Cora was born December 12, 1925, in Treutlen County to the parentage of the late Ed Walker and Mary Jane Walker.  She was married to the late Willie Richards and was a member of the Central Church of God In Christ.

Ms. Johnson had a third-grade education and worked in fields and factories. She moved to West Palm Beach, Florida to find work. She was a seamstress and raised a lot of children. Much later in life, she moved back to Soperton to care for her mother and that’s when she began her activist work with Georgia Legal Services/Georgia Clients Council, Southern Partners, Rural Black Leadership and many, many more.

She traveled and saw the world, she would find out information and bring it back to her community and surrounding communities. She would then pour back into them. She traveled up and down the highways helping God’s people by any means necessary. She said God told her to help His people and she did just that. Even when she was placed in Treutlen County Nursing Home, her room was always full of different people. She fervently prayed for the staff at the nursing home. She continued to sew while in the nursing home, making dolls, repairing the blankets there and she also made Christmas Pillow coverings that were used by the facility as part of the decor.

She was a mother, aunt, sister, and friend to all.

She is survived by one daughter, Cora Johnson McLendon; 4 granddaughters, Janice Darrisaw, Towanna Darrisaw, Tiera McLendon and Kiosha (ArQuavious) Searcy. She had a host of great, great-great granddaughters and grandsons, nieces and nephews.

Public Visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023 from 1 PM until 6 PM at Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home in Lyons, GA.

Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at 11:00 AM from the sanctuary of First Church of God in Christ in Soperton, GA.  Superintendent Johnny B. Johnson is the Pastor.  Rev. Clarence Pittman will deliver the eulogy.  Interment will follow in Love Quarters Cemetery in Soperton, GA.

Vincent R. Drummer Funeral Home is in charge of all arrangements for Missionary Cora Johnson.
