2 9 23 Wrestling Area pic3699

The boys and girls kicked off their individual run to the State Championships at the GHSA Area 1 Girls Traditional Tournament this past weekend and gained momentum heading into the State Sectional Tournament.

The girls were hosted in Effingham Co. this past Friday. We had three girls competing: LaDiamond Mosley, Emily Hower, and Corneisha Bullard. LaDiamond Mosley ended the day 2-2 and finished in 5th place, Emily Hower ended the day 1-1 and finished in 2nd place, and Corneisha Bullard ended the day 3-1 and finished in 3rd place. With the top four placements moving to the State Sectional Tournament Emily Hower and Corneisha Bullard move on and LaDiamond ends her wrestling season. “This was a good year for our girls! This was LaDiamond’s first season and things were just starting to click for her. Emily is a staple in our program and she is making a lot of noise in her weight class. She dropped her match in the finals, but it was winnable. Corneisha has a ton of fight in her and has a huge upside. This is her first year wrestling also and has made it to sectionals. She has potential to make a run for the State Tournament.”, said Coach Allen.

The boys hosted the GHSA Class 2A Area 3 Traditional Tournament this past weekend. The MatDawgs defended their home turf, winning 3 weight classes and for the second year in a row winning the Area team championship with 238 points. The Area Champions for the MatDawgs were Giovanni Yescas, Dabvn Wadley, and Tank Morris. In addition, all 14 weight classes had a representative from the MatDawgs squad placed in the top three. With the top four qualifying for the State Sectional Tournament, the entire team advances on. “I couldn’t be more proud of our team. They have put in a lot of hard work to get to this point, we just can’t take our foot off the pedal!”, says Coach Allen of his team’s success.

The MatDawgs will be heading west as they progress to the State Sectional Tournament. The Lady MatDawgs will be at Upson-Lee High School on Friday and the boys at Putnam County High School. The girl’s action starts at 10:00 am and the boy’s action is slated to begin at 9:30 am. We would love for you to come out and support, but you can also follow along with the action virtually by clicking on the below links to look at brackets and get live updates during the event.
