1 23 23 012123 WBB Recap vs Mobile M. Evans3484

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Brewton-Parker women’s basketball continues their winning ways in January with a tough SSAC battle against Mobile (Ala.) on Saturday in Gillis Gymnasium.

The Lady Barons (15-5, 7-4 SSAC) remain undefeated in the new year with a 61-56 victory over the Rams (10-11, 6-5 SSAC), moving up in the conference standings.

“We beat a tough Mobile group today,” Head Coach Steve Edwards said. “They play extremely hard, and they are tough defensively. We didn’t play well offensively, but we battled on the defensive end.”

“We made the plays we needed to win this one late,” Edwards said. “We will get some rest and start preparing for Thursday night against Faulkner.”

How It Happened | 1st Q

Mobile opened with an early 7-2 lead in the first three minutes of play, but the Lady Barons responded well with a 10-0 run over the next five minutes of action to lead 12-7.

The Rams managed to outscore BPC 5-2 in the final two minutes to pull the game to just a one-possession score.

Madison Evans, Sy-Marieona Williams, and Keyanna Tolbery all notched four points each with A’Aliyah Clay connecting on a jumper.

How It Happened | 2nd Q

With a two-point edge, the Lady Barons found a pair of points from the charity stripe to lead 16-12 in the opening minute.

Both teams traded scoring trips, answering each other until Evans and Williams boosted the BPC lead to eight points with 2:03 remaining in the half.

Mobile pulled the deficit down to just four points in the final moments of the quarter, but Williams converted both of her free throws to give Brewton-Parker a 26-20 lead at the break.

How It Happened | 3rd Q

The Rams came from the break energized and ready to fight, quickly leveling the game on a three-shot 6-0 run in the opening minute of play.

A trey from Clay at the 8:27 mark sparked the Lady Barons to a 32-26 lead in just a minute of action with Angel McRae producing a bucket and a point from the foul line.

Back-to-back jumpers from beyond the arc dropped in for Clay and Micah Bess, moving BPC’s lead to nine points with just over four minutes remaining.

Another three-pointer from Bess and three scores from the foul line advanced the Lady Barons’ advantage to 12 points with just one minute on the clock.

Mobile connected on a jumper to make the score 44-34 in favor of BPC with one period to play.

How It Happened | 4th Q

The Rams would make the game interesting late, besting Brewton-Parker 22-17 in the final period of regulation.

Mobile gradually chipped away at their deficit, piecing together a 13-4 run in the first six minutes of the quarter to make it a one-point ballgame before eventually leveling the score at 49-49 just a minute later.

A deep ball from Clay came in clutch at the 4:39 mark to give the Lady Barons a three-point advantage.

After a successful two-point trip for UM, BPC took advantage of two free throws from McRae to move back to a three-point ballgame.

The Rams continued to find scores, but the Lady Barons remained too difficult to overcome for the visitors as they would not relinquish the lead.
