The renovation of the former Vidalia Toombs County Library is taking shape, and Howard Holman and Gary Campbell, members of the committee overseeing the change, updated the Vidalia City Council at the August City Council meeting about the progress.

“We’re pretty much on schedule; maybe a little behind,” Holman said, “but I think we’ll be okay. We’re remaining consistent with the budget, and we’re really excited about the progress.”

Campbell echoed his fellow committee member, adding, “We’ve had some delays, but anyone in construction will tell you that’s not unusual. But I fell like we’re doing good and getting the job done. I’d also like to publicly thank our general contractor, Harry Moses. Those guys are doing a phenomenal job.”

The renovation project began earlier this year and is expected to be completed and the library ready for occupancy in early 2023 and will be renamed the Dr. Mark and Tonya Spivey Public Library because of the couple’s sizable donation to the renovation. In addition, with the help of Senator Blake Tillery, the Georgia Senate contributes $2 million with the House of Representatives another $1 million. Other funding was made possible by private local donations from individuals and civic organizations.

In addition to much-needed space, once the new library is opened to the public it will include meeting rooms, a teaching kitchen and much more. The library will also incorporate the Ladson Genealogy Library which is currently located in downtown Vidalia.
