Mr. Joey M. Hullender, age 58, of Comer, Georgia, died Monday, December 25, 2023, at his home, following an extended illness. He was a native of Toombs County and lived in Vidalia most of his life before moving to Comer in 2007. He was a 1983 graduate of Treutlen County High School. Earlier in his life, he worked at Federal Pacific, Coleman Sales, as a bouncer at Kerigans, utility lineman, and after moving to Oglethorpe County, was a tollgate operator for Carrier in Athens. He attended the Church of God, and was a volunteer fireman in Mt. Vernon and Tattnall County. Joey was an avid University of Georgia sports fan; he enjoyed NASCAR, outdoor grilling, spending time with family and friends and loved to make people laugh. He is preceded in death by his father, Joe “Pete” Hullender; and one aunt, Betty Lindsay.
His family includes his mother, Mearlene Phillips Hullender of Vidalia; four siblings, Barbie Hullender Birkheimer, Linda Hullender Jackson and husband Erick, all of Lyons, Joanie Hullender and Kevin Daniels of Vidalia, and Joseph Hullender and wife Shea of Lyons; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, including an aunt, Mary Sue Hullender of Comer, and nieces and nephews, Willie, Tiffany, Tory, Shanerica, Justice, Glen “Jon Jon”, Eric, Jr. “Lil E”, Jada, and Chris, and his dog, Bonnie.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.
The funeral service will be Sunday afternoon, December 31st, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Blake Hardiman officiating. Burial will follow at Beasley Cemetery in Treutlen County.
The family will assemble at the residence of a sister, Barbie Birkheimer, 2998 Aimwell Road, Lyons, GA.
