Anyone looking to buy a house right now will tell you the market is tight, but in the City of Vidalia, things will begin to look better after an announcement made by Gov. Kemp on Monday and that was that the city was a recipient of a $2.5 million grant for infrastructure development.

Doug Roper, Mayor of the City of Vidalia, said, “There are a lot of thank you’s that go in with this announcement starting at the top with the Governor. The Governor, through the Rural Workforce Housing Initiative have seen the need for communities like ours to address growth and workforce housing, and we couldn’t be more excited to get this news from the OneGeorgia Authority through the Department of Community Affairs that we had received this grant.”

Mayor Roper said there are lot of people who have been working behind the scenes to see the grant come to fruition.

“This project has been worked on for quite some time,” he said, “and we want to thank our city employees who’ve worked diligently on it. We’ve worked closely with the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Lyons on a Housing Study. We know that there’s the potential for a lot of growth in our area if for no other reason than what’s happening in Bryan County at the Hyundai plant. Our community is primed for growth and infrastructure is definitely one of the areas that we’ve got to address.”

Triple Oaks will be the name of the new development that will be built on Loop Road and while the property isn’t currently within the boundaries of Vidalia proper, Mayor Roper said there are plans to annex it into the city limits. The city is partnered with Stanley Farms who will build around 70 homes in Phase I with up to an additional 150 homes in Phases II and III.

“These projects don’t happen without the developers,” Mayor Roper continued. “That Stanleys see a need and have a piece of property that they’re willing to develop to meet this need in the community and we’re proud to partner with them as well.”

No timeline has been set as to when the property will begin development.
