Four men thought they could outrun law enforcement Sunday in a motor vehicle chase that began on Interstate 16 and ended in Candler County, but they were wrong.

According to reports, a Georgia State Patrol trooper attempted to make a traffic stop of red Dodge Challenger that was clocked at 87 mph in a posted 70 mph stretch of highway. The car refused to stop, and troopers performed a Precision Immobilization Technique known as a PIT maneuver and the chase ended near Mile Marker 95 in Candler County. The fleeing vehicle veered to the left side where it impacted with the cable barrier causing debris to scatter across the highway.

But the driver and occupants weren’t ready to face law enforcement, and all four men fled on foot. Georgia State Patrol notified the Candler County Sheriff’s Office who responded with personnel and K9’s Daxx and Thunder. Three of the suspects were apprehended Sunday afternoon and found in the possession of a gun and late Sunday evening, the fourth was in custody thanks to an alert citizen who saw someone near Aline matching the description provided by law enforcement and notified officials.

Authorities have confirmed that the Dodge Challenger was stolen out of Kentucky.

The arrests were a joint effort between the Georgia State Patrol, Candler County Sheriff’s Office, GSP Aviation Unit, Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office, Stillmore Police Department, Candler County Emergency Management Agency, and others. This is an active investigation led by the Georgia State Patrol.

The names of the suspects have not been released.
