(L to R): Councilman and Mayor Pro Tem John Raymond Turner; Councilman Loyd Mobley; Councilman Bob Dixon; Councilman Cecil Thompson; City Manager Josh Beck; Councilperson Jennifer Evans; and Mayor Doug Roper.
For more than 40 years Vidalia City Councilman John Raymond Turner served the community, and Thursday night, those years of dedication and service were recognized by a room filled with supporters at The Pal Theatre.
Vidalia Mayor Doug Roper said, “It’s hard to honor a man who’s served so well for these many years. Mr. Turner truly has a heart for this city. He is loved and his unwavering dedication to our city and its citizens is unparalleled. His leadership has helped guide Vidalia through both prosperous and challenging times, leaving a legacy that will be felt for generations to come.”
Mayor Roper continued, “When I think about all the years, he and the late Mayor Ronnie Dixon has given to this city, it’s almost unfathomable. I don’t think you’ll ever see a Council with that many years of service and dedication again.”
To honor Mr. Turner for his service, as of Thursday evening the building which houses the Vidalia Police Department and Vidalia City Hall will be renamed in honor of Turner to reflect on his years as a positive influence on the City of Vidalia and its citizens.
“Renaming the current Annex building for Mr. Turner is a fitting tribute to a man whose heart has always been with this community,” the Mayor said. “His service – whether through his career, military service, or decades of public office has touched countless lives.
“We also recognize the unwavering support of his wife, Lillie, throughout the years. Public service is a sacrifice for families as well, and we are deeply grateful to both.”
“City Clerk Kelly Murray is collaborating with the company who will be placing the name on the building, and the goal is to have it ready within a couple of weeks,” Mayor Roper said. “Hopefully, when you come to the next City Council meeting on February 3, you’ll be officially walking into the John Raymond Turner Municipal Building.”
Mr. Turner began serving on the Vidalia City Council on January 1, 1984, and has represented the city on various regional boards as well as serving in the leadership of several civic, religious, and youth-oriented organizations.
