City of Vidalia Update 10/11/24 11:15am
We continue to make progress both in power restoration and some normalcy of routines (all of which are great strides for our community). Resources continue to come into our community and we are also in a position to redirect resources to communities that are further behind in recovery than we are (we are blessed).
(1) Looks Great Services has removed over 150,000 cubic yards of debris. Some things to note (a) they will be here for months and don’t panic if they don’t get all of your debris on the first pass. That will make multiple passes; you just keep getting debris to the right of way (b) they will also remove what they call s&d debris (storm and debris) but these need to be in separate piles. Do not mix with vegetative debris piles. They are removing 28,000 cubic yards per day. Currently they have 21 trucks in Vidalia, 15 trucks in the county and 11 in Lyons.
(2) The distribution center in Lyons is no longer operational to the public. We have transitioned this aid to the Salvation Army. One need the Salvation Army has is canned goods.
(3) Tomorrow (10/12/24) we have a combined event at Ronnie Dixon Park from 11:00am-4:00pm. This will be a Sweet Saturday event as well as a time of worship and prayer for our community. We want to invite the community to come out and spend some time together. It will be a much needed break from our storm recovery and fellowship we all need
(4) There will be an Insurance Village today and tomorrow (10/11/24 & 10/12/24) at Lowe’s in Vidalia from 9:00am-5:00pm if you need assistance or have questions for insurance companies
(5) Altamaha EMC at one point had 21,500 meters down in seven counties and 3,100 miles of line to repair. I’m pleased to announce they are down to 1,600 meters still without power in Toombs County. That is tremendous progress. On a normal day of operation, they have 2 overhead 5 man crews working, but they currently have 94 5 man crews and 24 right of way crews operating
There are so many people to thank.  We have banded together like I’ve never seen. This needs to be our new normal. This should be everyday life, not a reaction to a storm and the outpouring of support leaves after the storm. I’m proud of who we are, how we’ve responded and look forward to the continuation of community for years to come. Stay strong, keep helping neighbors, keep your sense of humor and smile…we have much to be thankful for
