It was great news for Montgomery County citizens when it comes to recreation, but that excitement has been short-lived.
Recently Montgomery County Commissioners were notified that the county had received a $2.2 million grant for recreation and Recreation Department Director Kendall Bennamon elaborated on plans for the money. Wednesday morning, Montgomery County Manager Brandon Braddy said the county was notified that the Governor’s Office of Planning & Budget informed them that the county would NOT be funding the grant based on the qualified Census tract and median income.
Braddy said he and the Montgomery County Commissioners are trying to figure out what they will do and are working with State Representative Leesa Hagan to [quote] “Get to the bottom of this.” [end quote]
The grant money had been earmarked to improve the lighting on the ball fields and walking track as well as provide other amenities for those Montgomery County citizens and guests who frequent the facilities.
Other area governments have also received significant grants to be used for recreation including the cities of Vidalia and Lyons. Lyons will be holding a Grant Award Celebration next Tuesday at 5:00 Vincent Faison Park.
