The Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit has arrested a Toombs County man and charged him with one count of Sexual Exploitation of Children.

According to the GBI, an investigation of Joseph Lewis Prater’s online activities began after receiving a CyberTipline Report from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children regarding the possible online possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material. This investigation led to a search warrant of Prater’s home and his subsequent arrest.

This investigation is part of the ongoing effort by the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, housed within the GBI Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit to identify those involved in the trade of child sexual abuse material. The program was created by the United States Department of Justice in response to the increasing number of children and teens using the Internet, the proliferation of child sexual abuse material and the heightened online activity by predators searching for unsupervised underage victims.

Assisting with the investigation in addition to the GBI was the Vidalia Police Department.

Prater, age 37, was booked into the Toombs County Detention Center on March 23 where he is charged with violating the Computer or Electronic Pornography and Child Exploitation Prevention Act of 2007. He was given at $10,000 bond at his first appearance but remains in custody.
