James Horne

Mr. James Louis Horne, age 87, of the Tarrytown community, passed away on February 4, 2023.  Mr. Horne is survived by his wife of over 63 years and the love of his life, Martha Fountain Horne; three children, Sonya Horne Patterson (and David) of North Carolina, Keith Horne (and Lindy) of Vidalia and Karen Horne Outler (and Glen) of Vidalia; six grandchildren, Travis Coxwell, Andrew Horne, Sarah Coxwell Harris, Margaret Patterson Tanner, Kevin Horne and Olivia Patterson; two great-grandchildren, Harper and Huxley Harris; sisters, Dorothy Horne Perks of Savannah and Sue Horne Taylor of Vidalia, and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Irma Lee Horne of Kibbee.

Mr. Horne graduated from Kibbee High School in 1954 and he enlisted in the Air Force that same year.  During his enlistment, he worked in communications and as part of the air police unit. He was stationed in Texas, Wyoming, Washington State and Newfoundland.  While in Newfoundland, he was a member of award winning rowing and badminton teams.

After discharge, he worked as a Georgia State Trooper for many years and then transferred to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.  As a GBI agent, Mr. Horne was assigned to the Atlantic Judicial Court Circuit and the Brunswick Judicial Court Circuit.  He completed many specialized training programs sponsored by Federal and State of Georgia agencies including the FBI Academy in Quantico.  Mr. Horne spent the last part of his law enforcement career as Regional Supervisor and then as the District Director of Internal Affairs for the Georgia Department of Corrections.  He retired in1990 from the State of Georgia with over 34 years of service. Mr. Horne, a first generation college student, earned a Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree from Georgia Southern.

Mr. Horne was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons where he served as deacon and treasurer for many years.  He was a long-time member of the Men of Faith Sunday School Class.  His daily goal was to make life better for someone that God put in his path and leave things better than when he found them.

After living in Toombs County for many years, he and Martha returned to his home place to live on his family’s farm in Montgomery County.  Mr. Horne enjoyed visits with his family, Bible study, tree farming, driving his tractor, woodworking, watching deer, wild turkeys and wildlife visiting the pond.

To those who knew and loved our father, he was grateful for your friendship.  A special note of appreciation to the staff of The Oaks at Bethany Assisted Living and the staff of Community Hospice. Each has made such a difference and touched our hearts in their attentive care, support and the love they have shared.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening from 5:00 until 7:00.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 7th, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ronald V. Hall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Dannie Williams officiating.  Burial will follow at the Phillips Family Cemetery in Montgomery County.
