JB Cone

Mr. JB Cone, age 73, of the New Branch Community, died Sunday, January 29, 2023, at Memorial Health in Savannah after a brief illness.  He was a native of Toombs County and was a 1968 graduate of Lyons High School, where he was a running back on the state championship team.  He ran track and broke several state track records.  He also played baseball and basketball.  After high school, he earned a scholarship to play running back at Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tennessee and later a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.  He worked with Shell Oil Company and traveled with the company around the world, including China, Saudi Arabia, Algeria, and the Ivory Coast of Africa, and retired after thirty years as Material Logistics Manager.  JB returned to Toombs County in the mid 1990s.  He taught Special Education and was soccer coach for both Toombs County Middle School and Toombs County High School.  Coach Cone played a major role in implementing the soccer program.  His middle school team went undefeated for many years and his high school team was region champions and made it to the state playoffs numerous times.  He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lyons, and he enjoyed coaching, fishing and shooting.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Burnell Ervin Cone and Johnnie Will Sikes Cone; and his niece, Bridgett Green.

His family includes five siblings, Jimmie Cone of Hahira, Martha Jean Cone Robinson and husband John of Watkinsville, Brenda C. Green and husband Ronnie of Vidalia, Gerry Dean Cone and wife Karolyn of Houston, Texas, and Janet Denise Lynn and husband Allen of New Branch; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening from 6:00 until 8:00.

A graveside funeral service will be Friday, February 3rd, at 3:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Church Cemetery (980 Mt. Moriah Road, Lyons, Georgia 30436) with Pastor Dannie Williams officiating.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to the Soccer Program at Lyons Recreation Department, 161 NE Broad St., Lyons, GA 30436 or the Bridgett Green Scholarship Program, c/o Mt. Vernon Bank.
