Hereos Cropped

Local heroes, the family they saved, members of the Toombs County Fire Department, and Toombs County Commissioners

A local mother and her four children know that heroes don’t always wear capes. Sometimes it’s just everyday people who are in the right place at the right time.

Such was the case last November when five people witnessed a single car accident involving this young family. Immediately upon the accident, the vehicle burst into flames outside the city limits of Lyons. Without hesitation,  Samantha Castro, Christopher Johnson, Stacy Callaway, Stacy Turbyfill, and Holly Brook Brinson ran to flee the victims from the inferno. Last Tuesday night, those heroes were recognized at the Toombs County Commissioners’ meeting by Toombs Fire Chief Johnny Moser.

“People want to help people; that’s why we’re such a great country,” Chief Moser said. “But it’s different when people risk their own lives to help their fellow citizens that they don’t know.”

Moser continued by addressing those who being honored, “If you had not been on that call….if your hands had not been there, there would have fatalities. You are true heroes in every sense of the word.”

Each was presented with a Life Saving Medallion, and Toombs County Chairman David Sikes read a Resolution noting their bravery and heroism.
