The potential for unfavorable weather has caused the cancellation of public and private schools in Toombs and Montgomery counties, and public schools in Tattnall and Treutlen counties today.  Vidalia City Schools Communications Director John Koon said the joint decision was made based on an abundance of caution for students and staff as well as hazardous road conditions that may result from wind and rain association with now Tropical Storm Ian.

In a final report on the inclement weather, Toombs EMA Director Lynn Moore said as of Thursday afternoon, the local area still needed to be vigilant.

“It’s off the coast of Florida and heading north,” Moore said. “It is predicted it will make landfall again somewhere around Charleston or Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, as a Category 1 hurricane. For our area, we will still be on the edge and could see 20-40 mph wind gusts and rain for Friday.”

Moore said he expects the storm to clear out by noon on Saturday.

Moore further issues a word of caution as the remnants of Ian pass through our area.

“Stay vigilant,” he said. “If it rains, do not drive through standing water. If you go outside, watch for falling limbs. Just be careful and wait for the all-clear.”
