Hurricane Ian may have less of an impact on us as originally thought, but our area is still not out of the woods yet.

Toombs County Emergency Management Agency Director Lynn Moore provided an update on the storm as the 1:00 briefing Wednesday afternoon from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

“Their meteorologists are predicting as of now sustained winds of 24 – 40 mph with possible gusts of up to 60 mph,” Moore said. “Toombs County is right on the edge of their prediction. The storm is expected to go offshore somewhere near Jacksonville, back out into the ocean and then come back along the Georgia coast as a tropical storm.”

Moore said meteorologists base their predictions on 100 miles from where the eye of the hurricane would have been, putting Toombs County and the immediate area just within the boundaries.

Moore said the wind effects of what is left of Ian to be seen in the area Friday through the early afternoon hours of Saturday.

The EMA Director said as of Wednesday no local schools had announced any closures because of the weather, but he will provide school officials with updated reports as he gets them and a decision on any closures should be made Thursday.
