Lucretia and Willis

Lyons Mayor Willis NeSmith presented Lucretia Nobles, 2022 Lyons Citizen of the Year, with a Key to the City.

Lucretia Nobles may be retired from the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service, but she is far from being retired from service to her community and Thursday night, her volunteerism with the Lyons Blood Drives, her work with the Lyons Lions Club and so many more endeavors rightfully earned her recognition as the 2022 Lyons Citizen of the Year.

Tommy Rollins, the 2021 Lyons Citizen of the Year, made the introduction.

“The is one of those who contributions over the years have enhanced the lives of their fellow citizens and made the Lyons community a better place to live,” Rollins said. “To say our honoree is involved in the Lyons community would be an understatement. It is hard to think of our community without her presence. She has a passion for Blood Drives and has coordinated eighty-three drives in 14 years as a co-chair. Her passion for the community begins with her family and her faith.”

Lucretia Nobles and her husband Darriel are only the second husband and wife team to have both earned recognition as a Citizen of the Year in Lyons. The other couple were the late Dess Gray in 1973, and his Wife the late Amelia Gray in 1975.

Nobles graciously and humbly accepted the honor, saying, “I want to thank the City of Lyons and whomever nominated me because I have no idea who that was. When I came to Lyons, I was young; I had dark hair, and I was slim, and I was not married. But the people of Lyons took me in and made me who I am today.”

The 2022 Citizen of the Year vowed that she would not stop her work in the community as long as God blesses her with the health to do so.

“I love the Blood Drives, I love The Mercy Medical Clinic and many, many more. I will continue to do that,” she concluded.

In addition to mementoes presented to her as the 2022 Citizen of the Year, she also symbolically received a Key to the City from Mayor Willis NeSmith.

The Lyons Lions Club hosts the Lyons Citizen of the Year.
