Vid. Comm. Choir

VIDALIA COMMUNITY CHOIR

A National Day of Prayer was held all around the country last Thursday including right here in Toombs County.  Vicki Tillery coordinated the event again this year that brought people of all denominations together for a unified purpose.

Originally scheduled to be held in the Toombs County Courthouse, the service was ultimately moved to the historic sanctuary of the Lyons First Baptist Church because of an ongoing court case in the courtroom, but the church provided a purposeful setting for the messages and for lending perfect acoustics for the voices of the Community Choir which was directed by John Morgan.

“It’s very important that we come together in unity,” Tillery said. “We need to pray as a nation because our morals are declining and we need to get back to the nation that our forefathers wanted.”

In addition to the scripture readings, personal testimonies were given by Tressie Thompson who lost her husband to cancer, Toni Wilkes whose teenage daughter was murdered while the family was on vacation in Florida, and Vidalia Mayor Doug Roper who was drafted to play professional baseball with the Toronto Blue Jays but he suffered a career-ending injury and later he and his wife endured a heartbreaking personal loss that was even more devastating.

President Harry S. Truman proclaimed a National Day of Prayer, and it was first observed on July 4, 1952, President Ronald Regan moved the observance to the first Thursday in May of each year. Locally, the event is sponsored by the Toombs Area Ministerial Association
