Jonathan and Adam

Jonathan Flower and Adam Zhang go for the cash in the 17 and Up Age Category.

The adventurous and brave stepped up to the table literally Saturday afternoon on the stage at the Arts and Crafts Festival to participate in the World-Famous Vidalia Onion Eating Contest.

From the little ones to the adults, contestants were categorized by age and vied to see who could consume the most onions in a timed contest.

In the age 17 and up category, two strong competitors went head-to-hear again as they did last year, but this year, rather than one coming out the victor, Saturday afternoon they tied with 7 onion each and split the winning 50/50.

Jonathan Flowers is a local man while Adam Zhang made the trip to Sweet Onion territory from Atlanta for the festival and the two have formed a camaraderie in the event.

“I’m competitive anyway, and I remember Adam from last year, but for him to come from New York to compete again says a lot about him,” Jonathan said. “It’s just all in good fun.”

The two men laugh and say their plan on standing side-by-side again for the 2023 World Famous Vidalia Onion Festival as the friendly competition will continue.

“Just bring on the onions!” Zhang concluded.

In the age and 11 years and under, Tucker Hutto won by eating 3 onions, and in the 11 -16 age group, Brian Houseman won with 4 onions.
