The aroma of those good Vidalia Sweet Onions filled the Vidalia Community Center Saturday morning when some of the area’s best cooks showed off their culinary skills. From casseroles to sweet jellies, cooks attractively displayed their best dishes in three categories: Appetizer, side dish and miscellaneous. From the 1st place winner in each category, an overall winner was selected and this year’s winner of $500 was Janice Graham for her Cabbage/Onion Casserole.
While there’s no doubt Janice is an excellent cook, she had another incentive to entering this year’s cookoff.
“I told my granddaughters if they won the Onion Queen in their division, I’d enter the cookoff,” Janice said. “Well, I made it through the morning pageants and then in the night ones, my granddaughter, Melea Pittman, won the Teen Miss so here I am!”
And on both accounts, it was evident that she couldn’t be prouder!
In addition to the overall winner, category winners including Rhanita Keaton/Paula Krulic for Vidalia Onion Dip in the Appetizer category; Janice Graham, Cabbage Onion Casserole in the Side Dish; and Rhanita Keaton, baked Brie and raspberry Onion Sauce, Miscellaneous category.
