May 12--The Lovett Lions beat the Vidalia Indians 8-7 in the rubber game of their three game series in the GHSA AA State Quarterfinals. Lovett will now move on to the Final Four.  The game was a nail biter with the Indians leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.  Both teams struggled on the mound with Vidalia issuing 10 walks and Lovett issuing 6 walks.  Bryce Morley came on in the 5th inning to get the third out and then holding the Lions at bay in the last two innings to give the Indians a chance to pull out the victory.

Vidalia was the home team and it looked like they were off to a good start with Bryson Whited on the mound as he got the first two outs in quick fashion.  However, the next three batters coaxed walks loading the bases and then two singles drove in three runs before a ground ball to second ended the inning.  The Indians went 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the first leaving the score 3-0 Lions after one inning.

In the second inning the Lions didn’t score but the Indians picked up one run in the bottom half as Graham singled, moved to second on a balk, was sacrifice to third by Moncus  and  scored on a ground out by Blount making the score 3-1 after two innings.

The Lions went quietly in the third inning and the Indians capitalized scoring 3 times.  Spivey led off and reached on an error by the second baseman but was then thrown out when he tried to go to second on a ball in the dirt.  Banks then walked with Mead and Whited following with singles to load the bases.  A balk call allowed Banks to score and the other runners to move up to second and third.  Dalley walked to load the bases again and Mead scored when Graham was hit by a pitch and then Whited scored on a ground ball by Moncus.  After three innings the Indians were now on top 4-3.

In the fourth inning Lovett picked up two more runs and shut out Vidalia in the bottom half to move back in front 5-4 after four complete innings.

In the top of the fifth Lovett plated three more runs before Bryce Morley came in with the bases loaded to put out the fire.  That put the Lions up 8-4.  In the bottom half of the inning Vidalia got three straight hits and one run from Whited, Dalley and Graham before two pop flies on the infield appeared to end the rally.  However, Walden and Morley each got clutch two out singles to plate two more runs making the score 8-7 Lovett going to the sixth inning.

5 12 21 Moncus

Morley shut down the Lions in the top of the sixth inning but Vidalia could do nothing in the bottom half leaving the score at 8-7 Lovett going to the seventh inning.  Morley did his job again shutting down the Lions in the top of the seventh.  In the bottom half of the seventh things looked promising for the Indians as Moncus led the inning off with double to right center putting the tying run on second with no outs.  Blount bunted and the catcher fielded the ball throwing to third in an effort to cut down the tying runner.  Moncus beat the throw and that put Blount on first with the winning run.  Walden bunted moving Blount to second.  A pop fly was caught in foul territory by the third baseman leaving runners at second and third but two outs.  Banks walked to load the bases but a fly to right field ended the threat and brought the close to a great season for the Indians who finished with a 29-6 record.
