Though born in Andalusia, Alabama, Mary Ann was raised in Vidalia, Georgia. She graduated from Vidalia High School in 1943 and was one of the last two living members of her class.

On October 7, 1945, she married Ted R. Kavakos and, after a year in New Jersey where Teddy served in the Navy, the couple settled in Lyons, GA. They owned and operated City Pharmacy from 1946-1974. After they sold the drugstore, she was secretary at Lyons High and later Lyons Jr. High, where she was affectionately known as Mrs. K.

Mary Ann joined Lyons First United Methodist Church in June 1946. She was a member of the John Durst Sunday School Class, the New Life Circle, and the Hill Climbers; worked with the church food pantry; and taught the kindergarten class for several years. She was a Past President of Lyons Garden Club; a Charter Member of Beta Sigma Phi; a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, of the Toombs County Library Board, and of the beloved Coffee Club Girls.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary Ethel Lester Green and Raymond Vaughn Green; her loving husband of 58 years, Ted R. “Teddy” Kavakos; son-in-law, Jimmie Hodge Timmons; sister-in-law, Loraine Kavakos Robbins and two nephews, Bill Carter and Don Carter.

Survivors are daughters Lorraine Kavakos Timmons of Athens, GA, Gloria Kavakos Aaron (Dwayne) of Fayetteville, NC; grandchildren Laura Sampson (John Schewe), Bill Sampson, Jr. (Angel) all of Athens, GA; Sam Aaron (Michelle Barnes) of Vidalia, GA; Katy Aaron Preston (Brooks) of Fayetteville, NC; and great-grandchildren Will Sampson and Marin Sampson of Athens, GA, and Caleb Preston of Fayetteville, NC.

The memorial service will be held at Lyons First United Methodist Church on Monday, May 10, 2021, at 11:00 AM with burial to follow in the Lyons City Cemetery. Reverend Greg Carter, great-nephew, will officiate.

The family will receive friends in the John Durst Sunday School Classroom beginning at 10:00 AM until the hour of the service.

Roberts - Stewart Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lyons First United Methodist Church for the Music Ministry or the Food Pantry or to a charity of your choice.
