(L to R): Commissioner Tommy Rollins, Commissioner Wendell Dixon, Chairman David Sikes, Retiree Charles Newsome, Commissioner Alfred Cason and Commissioner Darrel Nobles
Imagine getting up each morning for 43 years and going to same job. That’s what Charles Newsome did for the residents of Toombs County as well as some surrounding counties that utilize the Toombs County landfill. But now, he’s ready for a big change in his life.
At the April meeting of the Toombs County Commissioners Charles was recognized by the elected officials for his more than four decades of service.
Charles, a soft-spoken and humble man, says he really doesn’t want to retire, but on his 65th birthday on April 15, his health dictated otherwise. But that doesn’t mean he’s ready to just sit back and do nothing. He plans to help his neighbor part-time and spending time with his mother.
Lyons businessman Trent Akins addressed the Commissioners about the now-retiree and noted that he will be “hard to replace,” and that Charles “worked WITH Toombs County; not FOR it.”
“I wish him well in his retirement; he’s earned it,” Akins concluded.
