Vidalia Mayor Doug Roper presented the 2nd Vidalia Onion Citizen Award Monday night to a lady who not only knows military life personally but has continued to work tirelessly with veterans through the local Auxiliary long after being involved in active military circumstances.
Shirley Curl’s late husband Ken was a career serviceman and passed away in 1996. But Shirley was far from walking away from other members of the Armed Forces and continues to honor them each day.
Mayor Roper said he couldn’t think of anyone more deserving this month than Curl, and noted that he joins her in recognizing and honoring all veterans who’ve served.
Ever the epitome of a seasoned military spouse and supporter, Curl graciously accepted the award, but made it clear that she didn’t do it alone.
“I don’t care how strong you are, no one can do it alone,” she said, recognizing her fellow Auxiliary members at Monday’s night Vidalia City Council meeting. “But what we do together is owed to our veterans and I can’t think of a better organization to be a part of.”
