Mr. Curtis Mathis Sr., age 79 of Adrian passed away on Wednesday morning, March 10, 2021 at the Carl Vinson VA Medical Center in Dublin, Georgia.

Born in Meeks, Georgia he was one of four children and the eldest son born to the late Hubert Guy Mathis and Albertice Smith Mathis.  He grew up in Johnson County and was a graduate of Adrian High School.  After high school worked with his father for a short time before enlisting in the U.S. Army where he served in the Berlin conflict.  He was honorably discharged in 1962 and returned home and began a long career in the family business as a Brick Mason.  He worked in Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee before settling in the Rincon and Richmond Hill area for a number of years building Wal Mart stores.  Mr. Mathis retired in 1993 and returned to Adrian in the late 1990s.  Even though he retired; he never quit working and tinkering in his shop.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a sister, Doris Sumner.

Mr. Mathis leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Annie Jo Hutcheson Mathis, his children, Terri Lynn Saenz, Floresville, TX, William Craig Mathis (Carol), Bloomingdale, GA, Darlene McDaniel, Adrian, GA, Hugh Curtis Mathis Jr. (Sylvia), Cedar Crossing, GA, a brother, Guy Mathis, Americus, GA, a sister, Margaret Turner, Cochran, GA, fourteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 pm on Monday, March 15, 2021 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home with Reverend Allen Wiggins officiating.  

His family will receive friends on Monday, at the funeral home, from 11:00 am until the hour of service.

Mr. Mathis will be laid to rest on his property in Johnson County.
