The Vidalia High School Wrestling team secured a spot in the GHSA AA State Dual Championships as they swept Northeast Macon and Bremen on Friday at H. Ralph Parsons Gymnasium. With the win, the Indians qualified for the State Duals, which will be held on Saturday at Lamar County High School.
The Indians opened the day facing Northeast Macon’s Raiders and had no problem moving on to the 2nd round, where they faced Bremen, a traditional power in AA. The Indians led off the championship match with a win by Myikel Johnson and never looked back in the 51-31 victory; according to Coach Bobby Blount, “we just kept the momentum going from the region duals. Myikel started with a fall, and our kids just fed off of that.”
The Indians will now travel to Barnesville on Saturday for the Duals State Championships and head in as the #3 seed in the tournament, where they will face host Lamar County (6th seed) to begin the day. “We are in a good spot as the three seed and think we have a good chance to compete and finish well against the top teams in the state,” said Blount. “We finished 6th a couple of years ago, and hopefully we can go up there and better ourselves, but these are the top eight teams in the state, so when you get to this point, everyone is good.”
The wrestling gets underway Saturday at 9:00 AM with the quarterfinals, with the semis to follow. The Finals are scheduled for 3:00 PM, with all matches being streamed on the NFHS Network. Tickets for the event are $15.00 and must be purchased online at GoFan.com. Vidalia Fans click HERE. There will be no walk-up sales. The bracket for the event may be viewed by clicking HERE.
