A pedestrian was killed Friday night on Interstate 16 after the vehicle he was driving apparently became disabled and he abandoned the car and started walking along the busy highway to get help.

Treutlen County Sheriff Tommy Corbin said the accident occurred around mile marker 83 on the eastbound side of the interstate, about 2 miles from where the man had left his car on the side of the road. The Sheriff reports that the pedestrian was in the middle of the highway when he was struck by a semi-truck and the driver of the truck immediately pulled over. According to Sheriff Corbin, a female had just started the truck’s route replacing her husband who had gone to sleep in the truck’s cab when the accident occurred. The male truck driver hurried back to the scene of impact to render aid but saw there was nothing he could do for the victim because at that point, other motorists had also had impacts with the body. The truck driver immediately called 9-1-1.

The accident is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team and the name of the deceased is not being released at this time pending positive identification and notification of kin.
