The Vidalia Police Department has concluded its investigation into a reported incident involving a juvenile at the Vidalia Recreation Department this past Friday.
When officers were initially dispatched, investigators treated the situation as a potential attempted kidnapping and responded accordingly. However, as the investigation progressed, witness statements were found to be inconsistent, prompting further review and follow-up interviews.
After conducting secondary interviews and a comprehensive examination of the facts, investigators determined that the incident was not an attempted abduction, but rather a misunderstanding that originated from a safety concern.
"We want to be very clear: the parents did exactly what we want our citizens to do," Chief Rob Shore said. "When a child reports an interaction that causes concern, it must be taken seriously. We appreciate the family’s quick reporting, which allowed our officers to respond and fully investigate the situation. The Vidalia Police Department remains committed to the safety of all families utilizing city facilities. While we cannot always share every detail of an investigation due to privacy considerations, evolving information, or initial inaccuracies, the safety of our citizens remains our primary concern and the foundation of everything we do."
The department encourages residents to remain vigilant and report anything that appears out of the ordinary. This case is now considered closed, and there is no ongoing threat to the public. For more information, please contact Vidalia Police Chief Robert Shore at (912) 537-4123
