The Candler County Sheriff’s Office is pleased to announce it has received a $17,000 Grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) in partnership with the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police (GACP).

The grant will fund the purchase of five ruggedized mobile data computers for use in marked patrol units assigned to traffic enforcement and crash investigations.

“The loss of one life on our roads is one too many, and the fact almost all fatal traffic crashes can be prevented is one reason why we are awarding this grant,” Allen Poole, Director of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said. “The target of zero traffic deaths in our nation is achievable, and we will continue to help develop and implement educational messages, enforcement campaigns, and other safety initiatives aimed at bringing us one step closer to our goal.”

“These upgraded computers will improve the accuracy and timeliness of crash reporting and increase deputy efficiency in the field,” said Captain Justin Wells of the Candler County Sheriff’s Office. “This funding strengthens our ability to support GOHS initiatives and enhance roadway safety throughout Candler County.”

Candler County Sheriff’s Office serves approximately 250 square miles and investigates crashes across the county’s state routes, local roadways, and high-traffic corridors. The agency actively participates in GOHS enforcement campaigns and recently became a first-time recipient of the GOHS High Visibility Enforcement Grant. The new equipment will replace aging in-car computers currently deployed in patrol vehicles.
