The City of Claxton is mourning the passing of former Mayor Luther Royal. Royal died last Friday night.

Royal served as Claxton Mayor for 11 years, and 16 years as a City Council member. In a social media post pinned to the City of Claxton, the writer describes Royal as a dedicated public servant whose impact on the city will be felt for generations.

The writer adds that even after leaving office, Royal never stopped serving, and remained deeply involved in the community, always willing to lend his time, wisdom, and support wherever it was needed.

Visitation will be  Thursday, February 5, 2026, from noon - 2:00 at Rehoboth Missionary Baptist Church. His funeral will follow visitation. Burial will be Brewton Cemetery.
