The Telfair County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the GBI Tuesday in investigating the death of a 21-year-old McRae-Helena man.

According to a press release from the GBI, on April 18 Telfair County deputies were called to a shooting around 5:10 p.m., and when they arrived, they found the victim Jykerrion Maurice Oliver deceased.

A shooter has been identified but has not been charged at this time. The unidentified suspect told deputies and the GBI that that the shooting was a matter of self-defense.

The case remains under investigation by the GBI Regional Investigative Office in Eastman and the Telfair County Sheriff’s Office.

Once the investigation is completed, the case file will be given to Oconee Judicial Circuit District Attorney Tim Vaughn’s office.
