The Vidalia Police Department Patrol Services Division responded to a 911 call Monday around 11:30 in reference to a vehicle stolen at the Enmarket convenience store at 1401 E. First Street.
The victim reported that while she was inside the store, four juveniles entered her vehicle and fled using the rear Enmarket exit onto Virginia Way. Officers quickly located the vehicle on North Cheney Drives. When they attempted to stop it, the suspects drove to the dead end of North Chaney Drive and fled on foot. The vehicle, left in gear, rolled into a yard causing minor damage to the vehicle with no damage to the private property.
Within 30 minutes, officers were able to identify and apprehend all four suspects, who were identified as juveniles between the ages of 14 – 16. Two were from Vidalia and two were from Lyons.
All four have been charged with felony theft by taking a motor vehicle, and misdemeanor obstruction of an officer.
A 14-year-old was additionally charged with driving while unlicensed, failure to maintain lane, fleeing and attempting to elude, failure to obey a stop sign, and duty upon striking fixture (leaving the scene of an accident.
The Department of Juvenile Justice was contacted. A 16-year-old was detained at the Regional Youth Detention Center, and the younger suspects were released to their guardians pending court hearings.
