Mr. Shelley McCumbers, age 81, beloved husband of Carol Sue Gillis McCumbers of the Rackettown Community of Lyons passed away at their home on Saturday, September 16, 2023.

Born in Toombs County, he was one of six children born to the late Bertis Lee and Nellie Rose McCumbers.  As a child, the family lived in St. Augustine, Florida before returning to Toombs County in the 1960s.   Mr. McCumbers had worked as a Sewing Machine Mechanic at many area textile mills during his long career in the sewing industry.

After retiring, he enjoyed camping, gardening, trout fishing and traveling.  He and Carol traveled extensively covering the United States from coast to coast and many stops in between; but his favorite was out west and anywhere that had a lighthouse.  In addition to exploring the United States, they also visited the Bahamas, Canada and Mexico. 

Mr. McCumbers had attended the Pendleton Creek Pentecostal Church.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his siblings, Lola Mae, Elizabeth Annaruma. Harry McCumbers and Randall McCumbers.

Mr. McCumbers leaves behind his wife, Carol Sue Gillis McCumbers, Lyons, GA, a brother, Preston McCumbers, Aline, GA, his mother in law, Clarsia Coleman Gillis, Vidalia, GA, sisters in law, Sharon Palmer, Vidalia, GA, Tammy Vaughan, Lyons, GA, brothers in law, Jerry Bird (Evie), Orland, GA, Doug Gillis, Mt. Vernon, GA, a nephew, Joe Annaruma (Dianne), St. Augustine, FL, step daughter, Shelly Pruitt (Eric), Midville, GA, step son, Ken Wilkes, Higgston, GA, grandchildren, Chloe, Gia, Summer and Easton, two additional daughters, additional grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 19, 2023 in the Williams Chapel of Sammons Funeral Home, Soperton, Georgia.

Mr. McCumbers was laid to rest in the Lyons City Cemetery.

Serving as pallbearers were: Blake and Dustin Palmer and Johnny and Doug Gillis.
