Gregory Mosley

GREGORY VAN MOSLEY

The man accused in the May 2020 death of Dr. Nancy Shaw was officially indicted by a Toombs County Grand Jury last week. Gregory Van Mosley is facing charges now of Involuntary Manslaughter in the beloved doctor’s death.

Evidence presented to the Grand Jurors convinced the panel  that on May 7, 2020, Mosley, without intent, allowed his dogs to run loose in the county which is a violation of a Toombs County ordinance.

Dr. Shaw was known throughout the area to often feed stray animals that she believed needed nutrition. Police believe that in this case, Dr. Shaw was on her way home on Skyline Boulevard in Lyons when she saw four bulldogs mixes breed dogs and stopped to feed them. She was mauled to death by the animals that, according to Lyons Chief of Police Wesley Walker, were most likely fighting each other rather than their would-be human caregiver.

One of the dogs was killed shortly thereafter by a citizen when the animal was caught attempted to break into the man’s chicken pen. The other three dogs were caught expeditiously by Lyons Animal Control. Two of them were wearing collars that identified who their owner was.

Evidence from the scene of Dr. Shaw’s death was sent to the GBI Crime Lab and 15 months later, Mosley was arrested and charged. He was later released on bond.

Other indictments handed down by the Grand Jurors last week include burglaries, thefts, aggravated assaults, illegal drug possession and distribution, terroristic threats, obstruction of police officers, and one indictment of a man charged with allegedly having carnal knowledge of two of his own underage female relatives.

An indictment means that a Grand Jury has found evidence to proceed in court with charges against an individual and is not a finding of guilt or innocence. Indictments are a matter of public record.
