In a field of 27 teams and what Head Coach Mandy Godbee described as “the best competition we have faced and the largest meet in which have competed,” the Vidalia Boys Track team placed 3rd in this weekend’s Harmon Invitational in Valdosta. The Lady Indians tied for 10th place.
The Indians’ 76.50 point total was only 25 points behind 6A Veterans High School and was 7 points better than AAA perennial power Carver-Columbus. Tyran Jacobs led the way for the Indians, winning the 100m, competing against 53 tough opponents in a strong headwind. “He was not in the mix to win this race,” said Godbee, “but he was focused and diligent in fine tuning all elements of his races and he came up huge.”
The 4×400 relay team consisting of Jamarion Smith, Alton Boles, Adrian Newkirk, and Brandon Beasley also took first with a personal record. Several others, including Nahvie Berry, who finished 3rd in the 110h, also recorded personal bests.
On the girl’s side, Shayla Bennett continued to show why she is one of the top throwers for the Lady Indians, taking 2nd place in the shot put, with MaNiyah Phillips placing 5th in the discus. “I am so proud of these girls,” said Godbee. “Both ladies continue to earn personal best performances every time they compete as they continue to climb the state rankings.”
The Boys’ and Girls’ teams will travel to Lincoln County on Wednesday to compete in the Lincoln County Invitational.
