MatDawgs Head to Hazlehurst to Compete at the State Dual Championships

After a short hiatus, the Toombs County MatDawgs have qualified to compete at the State Dual Championships. This will be their first appearance since 2020-21 season, where the MatDawgs went in as a #8 seed and finished 0-2 at the tournament.

A resurgence of sorts seems to be on the horizon, as the MatDawgs enter State Duals this year boasting a #3 seed and their sights set on making history. “This is a special group of wrestlers. It’s not just the guys starting that make it special, it’s all of them. We will see where we end up Saturday, but I’ll tell you that our team is going to go out swinging for the fences.”, says Coach Allen. The last time the MatDawgs found a top 4 spot was their most recent trip to the State Dual championships in 2020, placing 4th. Overall, the MatDawgs have placed 4th three times (2007, 2014, and 2020), placed 3rd once (2019), and placed 2nd twice (2017 and 2018). They have yet to capture the elusive 1st place at the State Dual Championships.

The MatDawgs will be taking the mat on Saturday, January 14th at 10:00 am just down the road in Hazlehurst, GA at Jeff Davis High School. Coach Allen would love to see a large crowd on Saturday, “We hope to see a BIG crowd on Saturday, we have home field advantage. Duals are very emotional and exciting events. The crowd can play a big role in the outcome of the matches. It would be great to see friends, family, and our community come out to support these young men Saturday.”

We would like to coordinate a “State Duals Caravan” to roll into Hazlehurst with force! We will meet at the high school at 8:30 am Saturday and promptly leave at 9:00 am. We want to encourage all family, fans, and supporters to attend and show their Bulldog Pride as we head to Jeff Davis High School. They will be led by Coach Wesley Bratton and depart from the south parking lot between Lyons Primary and the High School. Please note: All unaccompanied minors must be accompanied by an adult.
