MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – Inside a ruckus Gillis Gymnasium, the Lady Barons Basketball program provided all the entertainment in the SSAC Game of the Week which proved to be a thrilling showdown against No. 9-ranked Loyola (La.) on Thursday night. 

The Lady Barons (14-5, 6-4 SSAC) stunned the unbeaten Wolf Pack (16-1, 9-1 SSAC) with a 74-69 overtime victory.  

“I’m so proud of our team,” Head Coach Steve Edwards said. “We came into tonight expecting to win and we found a way to get it done. We beat a great team tonight.” 

“We are at full strength, and we like how we are defending as well as sharing the ball,” Edwards mentioned. “Our gym was rocking tonight. The support was amazing, and we are extremely appreciative of all who came out to cheer us on.” 

How It Happened | 1st Q 

The Lady Barons opened the game with a jumper from Angel McRae with the Wolf Pack responding with six unanswered points to lead by four with 7:37 on the clock. 

Brewton-Parker returned with a 7-0 run capped off by a trey ball from Daisha Terry to lead 9-6 with 5:17 remaining in the opening quarter. 

After a quick score from Loyola, BPC built up a seven-point lead with 3:15 on the clock as McRae converted an and-one opportunity into a three-point play. 

Both teams finished out the quarter scoring seven points each, but a three-pointer from Sy-Marieona Williams with less than 60 seconds to go, energized the Lady Barons into a 21-14 lead in the first 10 minutes of action. 

How It Happened | 2nd Q 

Terry continued things into the second quarter with an opening eight points to lead BPC’s 8-2 run to start the second 10-minute installation. 

An and-one from Loyola was the first of a 6-0 which pulled the deficit down to 29-23 with 5:03. 

Brewton-Parker answered with a jumper from A’Aliyah Clay and a three-point play from Williams to pull out to another double-figure lead with just under four minutes to play. 

Loyola put together five points to get back to a two-possession ballgame, but the Lady Barons continued to provide responses, jumping back out to an 11-point lead. 

However, the Wolf Pack snuck in a quick jumper right before the horn to move BPC’s lead to 39-30 at the break. 

How It Happened | 3rd Q 

Loyola was firing early in the third with five unanswered points to open the first two and a half minutes. 

Scores from Madison Evans and McRae extended the BPC lead to eight with 6:24 left. 

After the Lady Barons moved back to a double-digit lead, the Wolf Pack surged late in the quarter with a 9-0 run to pull their deficit down to just two points with 90 seconds remaining before Clay closed out with a jumper to give Brewton-Parker a 49-45 lead. 

BPC was outscored 15-10 in the third but remained in control of the lead with 10 minutes to play in regulation. 

How It Happened | 4th Q 

The Wolf Pack began with a three-pointer and a fastbreak layup to capture a 50-49 lead in the opening minute. 

Jumpers from Micah Bess and Samerria Bryant reclaimed a 53-50 lead from Brewton-Parker before another score from deep leveled things for Loyola. 

The rest of the quarter remained tight neither team could go beyond a three-point lead. 

After leveling the score 56-56 at the 4:53 mark, Loyola took control with a trey before the Lady Barons managed to knock in five unanswered to lead by one with 27 seconds left. 

Loyola ended up clutching up in the final moments with a score in the paint with 12 seconds to go to force overtime. 

How It Happened | Overtime 

It was all Brewton-Parker early in the first two and half minutes as the Lady Barons notched an 8-0 run to lead 69-61. 

Four points and a few free throws later, the Wolf Pack was still in the game by taking advantage of fouls from BPC. 

Free throws down the stretch from Clay proved to be a deciding factor in the overtime period with Loyola still managing to score late. 

However, BPC managed to hold on to a tight lead, stunning the visitors with a 74-69 victory.  

Inside The Statistics 

As a team, Brewton-Parker shot for 32.9% (25-of-76) from the floor, 21.6% (8-of-37) from three, and 57.1% (16-of-28) from the charity stripe. 

A total of four Lady Barons scored in double figures with Williams leading the way with 15 points followed by McRae’s’ 13-point and 20-rebound double-double performance. 

Terry scored 11 points followed by Bryant’s 10. 

Both Evans and Williams produced three assists each while Evans led defensively with three steals 

Other Notables 

Both teams even 55-55 off the glass. 

Brewton-Parker led 11-8 in steals, scoring 18 points off turnovers. 

The win marks the first victory over the Wolf Pack since Jan. 30, 2020, and also wipes the visitors of their unblemished record, snapping a 16-game winning streak.
