11 21 22 111922 WBB vs BMC 5 Angel McRae3059

MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – On Saturday afternoon, Lady Barons basketball continued action in Gillis Gymnasium with an SSAC matchup against Blue Mountain (Miss.).

Brewton-Parker (6-2, 1-1 SSAC) dropped the first conference loss of the season to the Toppers (6-2, 1-1 SSAC) in a 72-65 loss.

“We came out super flat today and Blue Mountain hit us in the mouth,” Head Coach Steve Edwards said. “We aren’t a very tough team, and we did not respond well to adversity today. To be a good team we must play with passion, and we did not do that.”

“Blue Mountain played well, and they did a great job against us today,” Edwards added. “We will get back to work and we will be better.”

How It Happened | 1st Q

The Toppers opened the game with an early 5-0 lead, taking advantage of back-to-back missed three-pointers from the Lady Barons.

Keyanna Tolbert knocked down a three to open the scoring for BPC at the 6:31 mark before Angel McRae leveled the score nearly two minutes later.

BMCU responded with a 6-0 run, leaving three minutes on the clock.

Two-straight treys from Madison Evans and a fastbreak score from McRae equalized the game at 13-13 with 1:21 left.

McRae secured a layup to give BPC a 15-14 lead in the final moments of the period.

How It Happened | 2nd Q

Blue Mountain scored 19 unanswered points over the span of nearly eight minutes of play to open the second quarter.

After a sluggish start, Brewton-Parker began chipping away at the 17-point deficit with an 8-0 run to pull the Toppers’ advantage down to nine points with 55 seconds left in the half.

BMCU produced five points in the final 40 seconds to close out the half with a 37-23 lead, outscoring BPC 23-8 in the second period.

How It Happened | 3rd Q

After an opening layup from BMCU, Brewton-Parker produced five points to knock the deficit down to 11 points with 6:33 on the clock.

The Lady Barons began to chip away at the deficit, scoring seven unanswered points to pull the game to 42-35 with 4:15 remaining.

A trey from A’Aliyah Clay at the 3:36 mark made it a two-possession ball game.

Blue Mountain outscored Brewton-Parker 8-3 in the final minutes of the quarter to lead, 52-41.

How It Happened | 4th Q

Brewton-Parker managed to produce their best scoring quarter in the fourth, posting 24 points.

A 10-4 run to open the quarter moved the Lady Barons’ deficit to just five points behind the Toppers with six minutes left to play.

Some back-and-forth action between both teams occurred before scores from Tolbert and McRae pushed the score to just a one-possession game at the 2:02 mark as BMCU led, 63-60.

Unfortunately, BPC could not pull back under five points as the Toppers were able to hold off the Lady Barons to seal the 72-65 win.
