Margaret Ann Sowell

On Monday evening at sunset, Margaret Ann slipped peacefully out of this world and into the arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ in heaven.  She was 64 years old and is survived by her husband Warren Sowell, her sons and spouse, Clayton and Grayson Colleran, and Rett Colleran, her daughter and son Elizabeth Ann and Joshua Sowell, her brothers and sisters and spouses Jim and Terri Davidson, JoDelle and Greg Burwell, Patrick and Jennifer Davidson, Lane and Bobby Darnell, and Chris Miller, her nieces and nephews, Lindsay and Brad Trowe, Anna and Katie Darnell, Madison and Jack Davidson, and Mackenzie and Sean Miller, her grandchildren Sloan and Avalyn Colleran, her stepmother Pat O’Brien Davidson, and her great niece, little Gwennie Trowe.  Preceding her in death was her first husband Alex Colleran, her mother Joanne Davidson-Inniss, her father Everett Davidson, her brother and sister Zack Davidson and Dee Dee Miller, and members of her Fulcher family from Waynesboro, GA, her Davidson family from Atlanta and surrounding areas, and her Colleran family of Beaufort County, SC.  Margaret Ann’s great love of family was on display often as she would host reunions, special events, and family gatherings for as many as could congregate at her beloved “Full Circle” home in Bluffton, SC.

Margaret Ann was a devout Christian, a student of the Bible, and a faithful follower of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  She was a loyal member of the Church of the Cross in Bluffton, SC where she attended for almost 40 years.  Her faith sustained her – especially during her latter days as she battled serious illness with courage, conviction, and the knowledge that this world was not her home; and that, as her mother would often say, she would one day “go to heaven standing up”.  And that’s precisely what she did.

During her lifetime, she accomplished much as a dedicated family member, a hard-working professional, and as a role model for all those who knew and loved her.  Margaret Ann was a gifted student who was blessed with an incredible intellect.  After her formal education in Waynesboro and then the College of Charleston, she was licensed to serve as a Financial Advisor for both Merrill Lynch, and then for Danzell Investment Group on Hilton Head.  After almost 30 years in the financial services industry, and as her family grew and her life’s demands changed, she transitioned into various management and support roles in real estate development.  She worked at both Berkeley Hall Plantation, and then Palmetto Bluff, having participated in those development’s opening and growth, and as they became the world-class luxury residential and private club destinations that they are today.

Margaret Ann was a gifted homemaker, a beloved wife, and a loving mother, aunt, sister, and friend.  While she fondly remembered her childhood and adolescent years in Waynesboro, and all the many lifelong friends she had there, it was her love of the South Carolina lowcountry, its history and its culture that captured her heart.  From the time she first set foot on the beach in Port Royal Plantation, to the sunset that glistened on the evening of her passing, she was captivated by the lowcountry’s beauty, its ancient oaks, and the unique lifestyle and culture that gave meaning to the place she called “home”.  Margaret Ann embodied everything it means to be a southern belle.  She saw things here, and in our people and customs, that are not always evident to those who have come from other places.

Margaret Ann Colleran Sowell loved others – and her love was reciprocated back to her throughout her lifetime, in ways that are known only to her, and to her God.  Go rest high upon that mountain dear one, your work on this earth is done.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2022 at 2PM at the Church of the Cross, 110 Calhoun Street, Bluffton, SC 29910.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in the name of Margaret Ann Colleran Sowell be made to the Church of the Cross, P.O. Box 278, Bluffton, SC 29910
