Presgraves

Just over a week after overpowering a Toombs County jailer and escaping in a Pineland Paper box truck, Robert Lee Presgraves is back in custody.

Capt. Jordan Kight of the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday morning around 10:00, a Montgomery County Deputy saw a man matching Presgraves description approximately one-and-a-half miles from Mount Vernon on GA Hwy. 56 south. The deputy was able to take Presgraves into custody without any resistance.

Presgraves told the deputy that he was “tired of running.,” and was transported to the Toombs County Detention Center.

On May 5, Presgraves was not currently in the custody of the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office when he appeared in his personal clothing directly from a rehabilitation center before Middle Judicial Circuit Chief Judge Robert Reeves on various charges and was given a prison sentence. Judge Reeves explained in detail to Presgraves that should he choose to escape prison what the ramifications would be. When he was being transported to jail, Presgraves did indeed escape. Several law enforcement agencies joined in the search and later that day, they found the truck he stole abandoned on a dead-end road, but there was no sign of the escapee.

In addition to the charges in which he was originally sentenced in court for, he has new charges against him including theft of an automobile, felony escape, and a misdemeanor charge of simple battery.

Presgraves had a prior incarceration in the Georgia Department of Corrections. According to the DOC inmate query, he had served time in the state’s penal institutions for various drug charges, thefts, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer in Tattnall, Toombs, Montgomery, and Bulloch counties. He was most recently released from Muscogee County Correctional Institute on March 17, 2021

“We just want to say, ‘thank you’ to the Montgomery County sheriff’s Office for bringing this escape investigation to a close,” Capt. Kight said.
