Another scam has begun in Toombs County.
According to Clerk of Courts Nancy Pittman, within the last few days she has had interactions with people showing great concern because they were contacted by phone by someone saying they did not show up for jury duty, and a warrant had been issued for their arrest unless they pay money.
“Don’t be scammed,” Pittman said. “The person(s) making those calls are not from our office, nor the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office.”
If you had truly been summoned for jury duty, you would have received a letter in the mail. The Clerk of Courts Office does not inform potential jurors over the telephone that they are to show up for duty. Plus, paying money will not get you excused for nonparticipation if ordered to serve as a potential juror..
“If you do get a call from someone like this, please call the Clerk’s Office or the Sheriff’s Office,” Pittman said. “Please don’t be a victim of this scam.”
