Vidalia High School competed against other area high schools in the Region 5 Competition hosted by SkillsUSA Georgia. Students from 33 regional high schools faced off on January 21st at the Oconee Fall Line Technical College in Dublin in 25 different types of contests.
“SkillsUSA Georgia Region Competition is a great way for students to showcase their talents in a unique and involved way,” said Gray Meredith, Construction Teacher at VHS. “It is humbling to watch these kids apply their skills during the competition and receive real-life experience as part of the process. Competitions were held in the following skill categories at this challenge: Advertising Design, Architectural Drafting, Automotive Service Technology, Broadcast News Production, Cabinetmaking, Carpentry, Cosmetology, Electrical Construction Wiring, Esthetics, Extemporaneous Speaking, First Aid-CPR, Graphic Communications, Job Interview, Job Skill Demonstration A, Job Skill Demonstration Open, Masonry, Pin Design, Plumbing, Prepared Speech, Quiz Bowl, T-Shirt Design, Team Works, Technical Drafting, Welding, Welding Fabrication
Along with the competitors who attended this event, more students attended as observers to learn the process in hopes of competing in future years. Oconee Fall Line Technical College provided the volunteer judges for each of the skills competitions, as well as the volunteers who offer hands-on activities for student observers. These activities help students become more familiar with the process of competition.
