1 14 22 BPC 011322 WBB Recap at Mobile648

MOBILE, Ala. – After exactly one month away from the court, Brewton-Parker Women’s Basketball returned to play against SSAC foe Mobile (Ala.) on Thursday night.

The Lady Barons (8-5, 2-3 SSAC) fell to the Rams (9-3, 3-1) 69-64 as Mobile surged late in the fourth quarter to surpass Brewton-Parker.

“We made some immature plays tonight and those cost us late,” Coach Steve Edwards said. “We controlled the score for the entire game until the final three minutes.”

“Mobile out-worked us and killed us on the board,” Edwards added. “We have to be better in the final minutes if we want to be able to win the close games against good opponents.”

How It Happened

Brewton-Parker opened the game with a bucket from Madison Evans with Mobile quickly responding to level. Both teams traded scoring trips down the floor with the Lady Barons breaking the 4-4 tie to lead by two with just over seven minutes to play in the first quarter.

After scores from Na’Kayia Greene and Mayya Hopkins, the Lady Barons gathered a five-point lead with roughly five minutes remaining. Brewton-Parker closed out the rest of the quarter outscoring Mobile 7-6. BPC led 18-12 after the opening 10 minutes of play.

The Rams quickly pulled the deficit down to two points after a 4-0 run in the opening two minutes of the second period. Angel McRae scored with 7:53 on the clock to push the Lady Barons back to a four-point lead but Mobile answered with a bucket nearly two minutes later to move the deficit back to two.

Free throws from Sy-Marieona Williams and a jumper from Alexia Galloway advanced the BPC lead to six with 4:45 left to play in the half. Shortly after the Rams gathered back-to-back buckets to pull within two yet again. Brewton-Parker closed out the first half outscoring Mobile 9-3 in the final three minutes of play, heading to the break with a 34-25 lead.

The Lady Barons gathered their first double-digit lead of the night with a jumper from Evans to lead 36-26 with 8:22 left in the third period. Mobile continued to respond to each of Brewton-Parker’s scores with BPC’s lead bouncing between single and double-digits.

With 6:49 left, the Lady Barons moved the lead to 11 points but Mobile answered yet again to pull into single digits. The Rams managed to battle through the period and diminish the deficit to just four points in the final minute, but Keonya Mincey knocked down a three-pointer with less than 0:40 left on the clock to lead by seven points.

Mobile outscored Brewton-Parker 20-18 in the period but the Lady Barons remained in control, leading 52-45 after 30 minutes of play.

After another big three from Mincey to open the fourth quarter, Mobile began chipping away at the Lady Barons’ lead. With 8:16 left on the clock, Mobile began to surmount a comeback effort, remaining within single digits.

Mobile slowly pulled closer and closer to Brewton-Parker, chipping away at the deficit. Over the course of the next eight minutes, Mobile held BPC to just seven points while capturing the lead with less than a minute remaining. The Rams closed out the final couple minutes on an 8-1 run to secure the 69-64 win.
