Peggy Glisson

Peggy Sue Glisson

A Uvalda woman has been arrested and charged in the death of a motorcyclist last July.

Peggy Sue Glisson was arrested on November 23 following a Georgia State Patrol investigation into the death of Shannon Googe of Lyons on July 17 of this year in front of Big Ma’s convenience store in Uvalda. At the time of the incident, witnesses told deputies of the Toombs County Sheriff’s Office that Glisson pulled out from the store’s parking lot and into the path of Googe, and despite his efforts to avoid the accident, he was unable to do so and was pronounced deceased at the scene by EMS.

Glisson has been charged with homicide by vehicle in the 2nd degree, and a stop or yield sign violation. She was taken into custody on a warrant two days before Thanksgiving and booked into the Toombs County Detention Center and released on a $2,000 property bond. She is scheduled to appear in a Toombs County court in January of next year.

In other news, a Swainsboro man had been sentenced to 27 months in prison after pleading guilty to felony charges of sponsoring and exhibiting animals in a cockfighting venture. U.S. District Court Chief Judge J. Randal Hall also ordered Wendell Allan Strickland to pay a fine of $10,000 and a special assessment of $525 and be on three years of supervised released after completion of his prison term.

Strickland operated a cockfighting venue called The Red Barn on his Swainsboro property. Multiple law enforcement agencies raided the site in September 2020, seizing animals, related gear and arrested Strickland and other participants.

The U.S. Government is initiating forfeiture proceedings for Strickland’s property where the animal fights were held.

The charges fall under the federal courts, and as such, Strickland will be required to serve his entire sentence in prison as there is no parole in the federal penal system.
