Leesa Hagan

On Monday, November 8, The Georgia House of Representatives reconvened for the second week of the 2021 special legislative session. This week was marked by continuing work on new House district lines and honoring our brave veterans.

Early in the week, the House Legislative & Congressional Reapportionment Committee held hearings to receive public comments on the proposed House district map known as House Bill 1EX. The committee passed HB 1EX by committee substitute on Tuesday. “Committee substitute” simply means that the original proposed maps were amended slightly after hearing from the public and legislators. This bill was passed on the House floor Wednesday and will now undergo the same process in the Senate.

You can find important information about the state’s redistricting process on the Legislative and Congressional Reapportionment Office’s webpage at https://www.legis.ga.gov/joint-office/reapportionment. This webpage includes all the General Assembly’s current and proposed maps, an online portal to submit and read public comments about the process, and many other helpful resources.

Along with many of my colleagues, I was honored to attend the moving Veterans Day ceremony at the Capitol on Monday, which was hosted by Governor Brian Kemp. State leaders, joined by several veterans, shared remarks and reminded us of the true inspiration behind this federal holiday. Many of our House members have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and it was an honor to join them as we remembered those who dedicated their lives to defending our freedom and democracy. If you are able, I encourage you to make the trip to Atlanta for the ceremony next November.

While much of my attention is currently focused on redistricting, I am also using this time to prepare for the 2022 regular legislative session, which will begin in January. I encourage you to contact me regarding any topics that are important to you and your community. You may reach my Capitol email at This email address is being protected from spambots. As always, thank you for allowing me to serve as your state representative for House District 156.
