The Vidalia Indians erupted for 35 2nd half points as they ran by the East Laurens Falcons 50-21 on Homecoming 2021 Friday night at Buck Cravey Field. Bryce Davis threw for 193 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for four more touchdowns and 107 yards as the Indians moved to 2-5 on the year and evened their Region 2AA record at 1-1.

The Indians took the lead on their second possession, on a 41-yard strike from Davis to Jordan Powell with 4:51 to go in the opening quarter. It was Davis’ first catch of the year, and following a 2-point conversion, Vidalia led 8-0.

The Indian defense would hold the Falcons to a three and out on their first possession. Then following a 38-yard punt, the Indians went on an 8-play 47-yard drive, which resulted in Davis scoring from 2-yards out. Following a successful PAT by Tate McDaniel, the Indians held a 15-0 lead with 11:54 to go in the 2nd quarter.

East Laurens would go on an 8-play drive of their own on their next possession, but a fumble and recovery by Antonio Barron would end the Falcon drive and give the ball to the Indians on their 29-yard line. But the Indians could not capitalize and would be forced to punt the ball away with 6:01 to go in the half.

East Laurens would begin their first scoring drive on their 38-yard line, and the Indians looked like they would force another Falcon punt. But on 3rd and long, Falcon quarterback Kash Bryant would hit Traveon Richardson, who had gotten behind the defenders, for 61yards and the score, closing the gap to 15-7 following the PAT.
Neither team would produce any more points during the half, despite the Indians having a chance with less than a minute to go in the quarter to kick a field goal. Unfortunately, Tate McDaniel’s 36-yard try sailed wide, and the Indians went to the locker room with a 15-7 lead.

During the Halftime Celebration, Senior Jadhari Jones was crowned Homecoming Queen by Myesha Hall, the 2020 Queen.

The second half saw the Indians score on five of their seven possessions, including four in a row.

The first score came on a Bryce Davis 2-yard run, which was set up by a 47-yard run by Freshman A.J. McLendon. Following another McDaniel PAT, the Indians led 22-7 with 8:55 to go in the 3rd quarter.

East Laurens would answer the Indians with a score of their own, a controversial 2-yard run by Eli Downing, who appeared to fumble the ball short of the goal line and was recovered by the Indians in the end zone. But, an official gave a delayed touchdown signal, and after a brief conference, the score stood, and the Indian lead was just eight points 22-14 with 6:16 to go in the quarter.

But, the Indians would respond. On the ensuing kickoff, Sophomore Antonio Barron would take the kick and race 86-yards to the Falcon 4-yard line >before getting run out of bounds. Two plays later, Davis scored his third rushing touchdown, and with 5:27 to go, the Indian lead was back to 15 points, as they led 29-14 following McDaniel’s PAT.
East Laurens would score their final touchdown of the night on their next possession when Bryant hit Zaylen Boston on a 75-yard pass and catch to move the score to 29-21 with 4:16 to go in the 3rd quarter.

It was all Indians after that. Davis would get another TD on a 3-yard run, capping a 9-play, 57-yard drive to make the score 36-21 with 11:09 to go in the game. The Indians would get their second fumble recovery of the night on the next Falcon series when Keenan Harden would fall on a loose ball at the East Laurens 33-yard line. One play later, Davis would hit Jacaree Washington on a slip screen at the 34-yard line, and the Sophomore would race to the end zone for his 3rd touchdown of the year, and the Indians led 43-21 with 10:51 left in the game.

The Indians’ final score of the night came following a Darrell Brown interception of a Bryant pass, giving the ball to Vidalia on the Falcon 41-yard line. Again, on the first play following the turnover, Davis would throw a short sideline pass to Barron, who raced down the sideline for 40-yards and the score. Following the McDaniel PAT, it was Vidalia 50 and East Laurens 21.

On the night, Davis was 11 for 18 for 193 yards with one interception and three touchdowns while rushing 16 times for 107 yards and four touchdowns. McLendon carried the ball 7-times for 68-yards for a 9.7 average for his biggest output of the year.

On the receiving side of the stats, Barron hauled in 4 catches for 74 yards and a score, while Washington added a score on three catches and 58-yards. Powell’s touchdown catch was his first of the year (1-1-41-yds), and Dugan Johnson added two catches for 20-yards.

The Indians racked up 384 total yards on offense while the defense and special teams came up with four turnovers.

Up next for the Indians is the yearly match-up with the Toombs County Bulldogs, who were defeated by Jeff Davis 37-6. Game time for Friday night’s game in Lyons is set for 7:30.
