Yet another shooting occurred this past weekend in our area, this time resulting in the death of the civilian.
The GBI reports that on Friday night around 10:30 a Claxton man attempted to flee from law enforcement after providing fictitious information. Reports state that during a routine roadblock, Ramone Dwight told a Georgia State Patrol trooper that he didn’t have his driver’s license and provided a false name to the officer. The trooper checked the validity of the name given along with the description of the vehicle and found it to be false information. When the trooper asked Dwight to exit the vehicle, Dwight sped away and law enforcement gave chase. Dwight began shooting at the officers, striking multiple law enforcement vehicles. During the pursuit, a female passenger was pushed from Dwight’s car.
At times the chase exceeded 100 miles per hour through the backroads of Evans County. Several pit maneuvers were attempted by law enforcement, and the chase ended when Dwight lost control of his Kia Rio off Ponderosa Road and Firetower Road. At that point, the driver fled on foot while continuing to shoot upon officers. An Evans County Sheriff’s Office deputy and a Hagan Police Department officer fired their weapons as Dwight was shooting and pointing a weapon in the direction of several officers. The altercation ended when Dwight was hit with gunfire from the two officers. EMS responded to the scene and transported Dwight to Evans Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
No officers nor the female were hurt in the incident.
Dwight’s body was taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Pooler for an autopsy. The GBI is conducting an independent investigation and once completed, the results will be turned over the Atlantic Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office for review.
